Dermal Fillers
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are a modified form of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in human skin and throughout the body which holds water to maintain skin moisture levels.
As the hyaluronic acid levels in ageing skin decline, it can be replaced with injectable fillers. These mimic the same hydrating and lifting effect of lost hyaluronic acid, keeping skin hydrated and elastic, and helping you look and feel great.
How do dermal fillers work?
They come as a gel in differing formulations to suit different areas treated. They are injected just beneath the skin surface to replace lost hyaluronic acid. They quickly hydrate the skin, increase volume, smooth wrinkles, mask certain scarring and improve facial lines, usually around the mouth.
Where can I have fillers?
Typically dermal fillers are used to reduce the appearance of lines around the mouth and lips.
Fillers are often used to increase lip volume.
How long does the effect last?
The duration of the effect can vary from person to person and depends on whichareas are treated, as well as the person’s lifestyle.
In general the effects can be expected to last around 9-12 months.
Does it feel painful?
The fillers are incorporated with local anaesthetic, offering a less painful experience and no need for anaesthetic creams or blocks.
Are there any side effects?
Adverse effects are uncommon but some local swelling, reddening or some bruising can occur which usually fades within a few days and can be camouflaged with foundation.
Who cannot have fillers?
Pregnant women, people allergic to lignocaine or dental injections, nursing mothers and those with autoimmune diseases (multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus).
Anyone who has had an adverse reaction to a previous filler should also avoid treatment.
If any symptoms persist advice from the practitioner must be sought.
Anti-wrinkle Injectables
What are anti-wrinkle injectables?
Botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox®, is a naturally purified protein. When injected into a muscle it temporarily blocks the chemical signals which make the muscle contract. This relaxes the wrinkle causing muscle, creating a smoothed, rejuvenated appearance.
How is it applied?
Very small injections administered by a trained, registered practitioner.
Where can it be administered?
- Upper face – forehead lines
- Brow area – frown lines
- Eye area – wrinkles around the eyes (crows feet)
How long will my treatment last?
Results can last for 3-4 months after initial treatment, however subsequent treatments can last longer.
When will it start to work?
Results can show as early as Day 2 but it usually takes 10-14 days to see the full effect.
Are there any side effects?
Any medicines and procedures can cause side effects but do not occur to everyone.
Anti-wrinkle treatments are not permanent so any adverse effects will wear off, although in rare cases this can take a few months.
These effects can include:
- Injection site – pain, burning, stinging, swelling, bruising.
- Forehead site- headaches, drooping eyelid, skin redness, muscle weakness, facial pain.
- Eye area – swelling of eyelid, bruising and bleeding.
If I discontinued treatment will my lines look worse?
Should you choose to discontinue treatment, your lines will gradually revert back to their pre-treatment appearance.
